The Burney Falls area is one of the regular highlights of the GPFF calendar. Camping will be paid by GPFF.

Fishing for all skill levels - includes excellent novice water. See beautiful Burney Falls. Fish Burney Creek, right at the campground, Hat Creek, Pit River, Fall River, Lost Creek, Rock Creek, Lake Britton and Baum Lake.

Summer Nastich of "A Bush in the Woods"

Summer Nastich

Summer has bachelor’s degrees in biology, zoology, and oceanography from Humboldt State, a JD (cum laude) from Boston University, and a master’s degree in Environmental Engineering from UC Berkeley. She’s been practicing law for 20 years and her solo practice, Nastich Law, is now over a decade old.

Away from work, you might find Summer listening to audio books or podcasts, fly fishing, emersed in wilderness survival, carrying heavy stuff, or pranking her kids. Having discovered fly fishing just 10 years ago, Summer has visited 10 countries with her fly rod, posted over 110 YouTube videos and attracted more than 2000 followers.

This presentation will aim to (1) debunk the myth that you have travel really far from the Bay Area to get into good fly fishing and (2) help you figure out how to make the most of the options within 1-2 hours of drive time.

Fall on the Middle Fork of the American River

The Middle Fork American River flows through a rugged, beautiful canyon not far from Auburn, California. This local mountain tailwater is home to fiesty rainbows and some large browns. During the summer, flows fluctuate to accommodate white water rafters and kayakers and fishing can be challenging. After October 1st flows subside and prime fall fly fishing peaks. Streamers, indicator nymphing and hoppers can produce beautiful browns and rainbows to those willing to do some walking. Focus on the Middle Fork or combine this trip with steelhead on the Lower American or continue up the hill to the Truckee River and you've got a guaranteed great fall fishing experience on the books!

Jon Hubbard began fly fishing at 13 on the freestone rivers of the west slope Sierra Nevadas. After discovering northern California's tailwater steelhead and trout at 18, these fisheries and their powerful fish quickly became his passion. Jon has 30 years of fly fishing experience and has fished and guided in California, Alaska, Montana, Idaho, and Colorado. You can also occasionally find him behind the counter at Fly Fishing Specialties. His favorite pastime is sharing his knowledge and experience on the water with his guests and friends.

We'll be fishing alongside the Upper Sacramento and staying at Castle Crags State Park. The Upper Sac offers 38 miles of water from Box Canyon down to Lake Shasta. There is truly every type of water so this outing offers good options for beginner through advanced anglers.

This is prime water for nymphing and dry fly fishing for wild rainbows and the occasional brown trout.

Camping

Camping will be at Castle Crags. Reservations are not typically accepted after labor day but Lauren is coordinating with the rangers to see if an exception can be made. If not, this area is generally not too busy in the fall so we'll be able to get several of the first come-first served sites. Exact site numbers TBD

Upper Sacramento Clinic: The Upper Sac offers some great and varied fishing and plenty of accessibility. But it can be intimidating to figure out where and how to fish it if you’re not familiar with the water. GPFF is planning a club outing on the Upper Sac from September 18-20, and we have a special treat for those who want to dial in their game on this beautiful stretch of water!

Join expert guide Mat Squillanteon September 18 for a full day of on-water instruction, including an orientation to Upper Sac access points, seasons on the river, productive techniques, and one-on-one instruction to make your next two days of DIY fishing with other club members the best they can be! In addition, Mat has offered to give you a pre-trip briefing and casting clinic on July 8, so you can be ready to make the most of your time with him on the water. He’s an amazing teacher, knowledgeable guide, and a lot of fun to be with—a perfect way to launch your love affair with the Upper Sac! This clinic has 6 spots total and 4 are still available as of 6/1. Cost is $250 per person as a fundraiser for the club. Those who sign up for the clinic will be guaranteed a spot on the club outing. Grizzly Peak Fly Fishers is dedicated to the ongoing education in the art, science, and sport of fly fishing. One of our cornerstone programs is the GPFF Foundational Fly Fishing Seminar. Historically, offered in the spring & fall as interest dictates. The seminar provides entry through intermediate level anglers everything they need to know about the sport, including: Essential Equipment needed, Knots, Leaders, Casting, Stream water reading, Entomology, Fish Identification, Flies & their use, Landing and Releasing Fish and more.

This is NOT a ‘survey’ course, it is a full, comprehensive course that will give you the confidence and preparedness to move forward productively in the sport.

What you get: A 'Link' to a 50+ page, full-color course text, with plenty of lined pages for taking notes you can print out. Starter Kit: Practice Knot tying materials, Practice Casting Leader with False Fly & some useful starter tools. Additionally, you will be assigned a ‘mentor’ that you can contact at any time for help and advice. First session, a Zoom course, 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM (or more as needed). Second session, another Zoom session 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM (or more as needed) and the third LIVE session will be Saturday at the Kensington Community Center upper grass area 9:00 AM to Noon for casting instruction, then down to the 'Hut" classroom for Knots & course summary.

What to bring to casting session: #5, #6 or #7 weight Fly Rod, reel & matching fly line. (Let Mark know IF you need a club loaner for casting instruction). Sunglasses (or some sort of protective glasses) for eye protection safety, a hat is recommended. I'll have a 7,5' tapered practice leader with yarn fly for your casting.

Our coaches have decades of experience and will be working with you at your current level to help you develop the foundations you need to move forward in the sport productively.

Seminar Fee: Members $75, Non-members $115 (includes a year’s membership). REGISTER NOW as the class is limited to 12 students with registration closing October 3rd, 2026.

McCloud River Outing (Thurs-Sun)

Our annual October Caddis outing. Skill level - Intermediate to advanced(difficult terrain). Ah-Di-Nah Campground.

The McCloud River is absolutely beautiful this time of year. And the fish love the big caddis flies that should be hatching, especially the migrating (big!) browns. Just cast near a the edges and watch your fly explode!

NOTE: This outing is located far from medical services, in a remote canyon where wading is difficult and injuries are not uncommon. This outing is a fun trip that will test (and hopefully improve) your angling skills, but it is not recommended for beginning anglers, those with limited wading skills, or people with health and fitness issues.
